Task 5

Task 5

For task 5 I had to research and visit a place in Auckland. But my teacher said'if you have time, you can visit outside the Auckland.'  So I decided to go to North land. I was very nervous, because I haven't been  there before. So I talked with Judi, she is my Oral skills teacher and she was born from North Land. She suggested that I go to the Treaty House, which is the document that established the British Colony of New Zealand was signed in the grounds of the Treaty House on 6 February 1840. Actually, not only did she give to me some really good advice, but I had also interested NZ history.  So I decided to research some information about the NZ history on the internet.
Task 5 is very long, because I have done lots of evidences on this task. Firstly, I wanted to write some New Zealand history .After I researched some information on the internet, I made a plan for two days trap about the Waitangi and the Paihia.

I am going to thanks all the audiences who are read my Task 5.

The legend of NZ
Maui - no ordinary man
Maui is the gifted, clever demigod of Polynesian mythology responsible for fishing up the North Island of Aotearoa, Nealand.
After a miraculous birth and upbringing Maui won the affection of his supernatural parents, taught useful arts to mankind, snared the sun and tamed fire. But one of his most famous feats was fishing up the North Island.

Early settlement - The arrival of Maori

According to Maori, the first explorer to reach New Zealand was Kupe. Using stars and ocean current as his navigational guides, he ventured across the Pacific on his waka hourua from his ancestral Polynesian homeland of Hawaiki. It is thought that Kupe made landfall at the Hokianga Harbour in Northland, around 1000 years ago.

You will not find Hawaiki on a map, but it is believed Maori came frome an island or group of islands in Polyesia in the South Pacific Ocean.

                                                                                     Mao

Maori were expert hunter and fishermen. They move fishing net from harakeke(flax), and carved fishhooks from bone and stone. They hunted native birds, including moa, the world's largest bird with a range of ingenious traps and snares.Maor cultivated land and grew introduced vegetables from Polynesia, including the Kumara(sweet potato). They also ate native vegetables, roots and berries.Weaved Flax basket were used to carry food, which was often stored in a pataka - a storehous raised on stilts.

First European in NZ

First European explorer to discover NZ was Abel Janszoon Tasman on December 1642.Captain James Cook, who reached NZ in October 1769 on the first of his three voyages, was the first European explorer to circumnavigate and map NZ.

From the late 18th century, the country was regularly visited by explorers and other sailors, missionaries, traders and adventurers. In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and various Maori chiefs, bringing NZ into the British Empire and giving Maori equal rights with British citizens. There was extensive British settlement throughout rest of the century.War and the imposition of a European economic and legal system led to most of NZ's land passing from Maori to Pakeha (European) ownership, and most Maori subsequently became impoverished.

After I read NZ history,I was more interesting about the Treaty House. So I decided to find more information about the Waitangi Treaty House and Paihia.

This website give visitors all the activities in the North land and  help you make a plan.

Then I decided to make a two days plan to go to Waitangi. Firstly, I had to rent a camper van,I could arrive the Paihia on Saturday morning. Then I went to the Treaty Houses on Saturday morning took all the evidences. Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning I could have  some adventures.

I Left Auckland at 12am on Saturday. I had drove around 4 hours to Paihia.

I took the first video about the camper van at 8am .

After I had breakfast in the camper van, I went to the Waigangi. These photos about Waigangi Golf Club. It was very beautiful place.

Then I found Treaty house & Ground and I took some photos about there.

I was out side the Treaty house.

The Treaty House is NZ's most - visited historic building. It is administered by the Waitangi National Trust Board. The house began life in 1833 as British Resident James Busby's house. In 1932 Governor - General Lord Bledisloe gifted it to the nation. The house and grounds have been the focus of Waitangi Day events since 1934.

Then I found some evidences inside the Treaty.
                           Parlour

It was in this room on the morning of 5th February 1840, that Lieutenant Governor William Hobson,Admiral Joseph Nias,James Busby and the Reverend Henry Williams met to make final adjustments to the Treaty of Waitangi. Having concluded arrangements,Hobson received the dignitaries and settlers.People entered by the hall door and left by the french doors to the verandah. The official party then proceeded to a marquee on the lawn where the first treaty meeting was held. The Treaty was signed there on 6 February.

This evidence about the Treaty Waitangi of document.

  Flag
To provide ships built in NZ with a national flag under which to sail and as a first step towards settled government, Busby asked the northern chiefs to select a national for NZ.
On 20 March 1834, about twenty-five chiefs from the Bay of Islands and Hokianga gathered at Waitangi to choose the first flag. The chosen flag was already used by the Anglican missionaries.
It was approved by the British Admiralty as the national flag of NZ and remained in official use until replaced by the Union Jack in 1840.
The flag came to be know as the flag of the United Tribes of NZ and Ko Huiarau, the United Tribes, continue to use it.
Maori believe the British Crown recognised the mana of NZ and the chiefs when it accepted the flag.

I was outside the meeting house.

The British Residence 6 February 1840.

The Busbys shared this room with their children before 1840; John born 1834, Sarah born 1835, James born 1838 and George born 1839.There was a bed, a crib made locally, and a 'handsome cot'sent frome Sydney for baby John in 1835. The whereabouts of this furniture is not know and new pieces have been made to fit the descriptions.

Busby sold this medicine chest to a local trader Gilbert Mair, on 25 August 1841 for $16/17/6

when I took some evidences in the Treaty House,I was trying to find someone allowed me to took the video. Unfortunately, there were not many members of staff here and they didn't want to on my video. But I didn't give up, I found the other place and tried again.

Then I went to Waigani     Gateway.

I was very happy. The lady allowed to take a video with me.

She told me across a path I will see the biggest Waka in the world.

I was very excited and I was really like this path.

The Waka  is the biggest one in the world.

The Stump of a Large Kauri Tree

The bow & stern sections of the waka' Ngatokimatawhaorue' came from this tree

Flagstaff - Waitangi Treaty Grounds

I found a cinema at the Treaty Grounds. This movie talked about NZ history.

After I finished my research, I met this guy at the Waiganti  Gateway. He is famous in the Treaty Grounds. He have made lots of videos at there.

I finished my work around 12 o'clock. So I decided to go to Paihia have some adventures.

This is a town of Phahia.

Firstly, I went to information office and the lady helped me to make a plan.

I went to sea by this boat

Inside the boat,we could see the Captain was sitting on the chair.

Actually, I am afraid go to sea, because I hate the feeling when the boat going too fast, they will bump on the sea.

This was my feeling when I on the boat.

This island have a Tea Tree which is 3 thousand years old.

These places were so beautiful. I loved this place.

I was very lucky, I saw some dolphins and I took the videos.

I worked very hard to take these videos. Actually, I was give up my plan about swimming with dolphins, because the weather was not good, and the water was very cold.

I had taken around 30 videos for the dolphins. When I took the videos, it was really hard to find where they are.

After I saw the dolphins, I went to the Hole In The Rock.

The Hole In The Rock, off Cape Brett, has been etched by wind and wave in the Bay of Islands north of Auckland, New Zealand. Boat cruises may attempt to sail through the Hole In The Rock, more like the eye of a needle, when the tide is right. Jetboats also bring you through the Hole In The Rock in a heart stopping rush.

I didn't swim with dolphins, so after I finished my adventure ,I decided to take a photo with a dolphin.

I found a very nice place to stay at  night.

Then I found a famous restaurant to have dinner. Unfortunately, the taste was not good.My god, I missed Auckland at that moment.

Sunday. Just get up decided to play kiwi flying

On Sunday, I decided to play Kiwi Flying.

I took this boat went to sea again, cool!!

I was scared by this feeling.

The guy helped me to do some prepare work.

I was shouting!

Finally, I was flying . The feeling was good.

After I finished the kiwi flying,I went to the nice Chinese restaurant to have lunch.

This was a good evidence which I wrote on the north land beach! haha

Feeling about Task 5

Task 5 was interesting for me, because I had to research and visit a place in New Zealand. I decided to go to Northland. But I have never been there before, so I didn’t know how to choose a place to do my research. Actually, I was very lucky, because my Oral Skills teacher(Judi), she was born in Northland, so she gave me some good advice. She suggested that I go to the Treaty House which is in Paihia. After I talked with Judi, I did more research on the internet and I made a two days plan.

I rented a camper van on Friday afternoon, because I decided to leave Auckland by 12am on Saturday morning. It was a really bad idea due to driving at the midnight. It was very dark to see the road and I had to use the GPS. So I was driving more than four hours to get there. After I arrived Paihia, I took a short rest, because I couldn’t sleep. I thought I was very excited at that time. Then I took the first video about the camper van in the morning. It was a nice van. After this video, I went to the Treaty House. I was disappointed in the Treaty House. Firstly, I couldn’t hire a  guide. Secondly, Many members of staff didn’t have time to help me to take a video. It’s never happened before. But I didn’t give up. I decided to ask them one by one until I found someone to help me. The good new was a lady helped me to take the video.

After I finished my research about the Treaty House, I decided to have some adventures. I had these adventures for my audience. When they looking for my Task, I hope they really enjoy it. So I went to sea and saw some dolphins. This adventure was a risk, because I had to spend more than 3 hours on the boat, and I was afraid to go to sea. I hated the feeling when the boat was going too fast, they will bump on the sea. The very important thing is that I just had a 60% chance to see the dolphins due to the weather. The weather was not very good on Saturday. But I always lucky. After we drove around 2 hours, I saw lots of dolphins, then I took 40 videos of them. In the evening, I found a nice place to stay with a waterfall. On Sunday morning, I went to sea again. This is Because I wanted to play Kiwi Flying which is a Top 6 activity in Paihia. These information are all on my videos. I hope my audience will enjoy it.

Task 5 was very challenging. It was very difficult, because I had to go somewhere I never been before and I had no idea how can I finished all my research. Acutally, I decided to go to Northland on Wednesday afternoon, then I made too many calls to my friends and my boss to helped to work at the weekend. When I got back home,  I spent all the time doing research about the Northland and I still had no I idea which place I should to go. I was really lucky to find Judi , who gave to me some very good advice on Thursday. I spent two days finding all the information about the Paihia. This Task made me very crazy, I had to make a plan very carefully. Because I wanted to do my Task 5 which looks like a travel diary. Then I didn’t have enough time to stay there. So I had to manage my time very well and I wanted  show my real feeling, when I was doing my Task. Fortunately, I have done it. I took lots of videos for this travel, and my audience will see my angry face, happy face and my weakness side on my videos.  Making a plan and thinking of ideas were very difficult parts in this Task. I was doing all these things by myself. But I really  have ideas For example, I rent a comper van, and I had some adventures. Most important thing is I finished my main research.

For this Task I did something I have never done before. I was very happy. I learned something in this task. If I am afraid to do something, don’t give up and try to do it again and again. Then I will know that if something is a  psychological problems. I can defeat myself.

  1. Hi Grace,
This is absolutely fantastic! You have put a great deal of time, effort and energy to complete this task well. You did so many interesting things and obviously tried really hard to gather evidence of your communication with different people.

It is interesting that in the group discussion you say that it was difficult to get people to agree to being videoed and yet on your blog you make it look as if it was easy!

Well done on this task.I really enjoyed sharing your experiences. You deserve a job in New Zealand's tourism advertising!
